Why I love Hongdae

I first visited Seoul two years ago, and while planning for my trip, I decided to stay in Hongdae after reading that it is mostly frequented by students and younger people.

I fell in love with Hongdae after watching a young singer performing on the streets.

He was performing Don't Forget (잊어버리지마) by Crush (feat. Taeyeon), which was my jam at that time.

Since it was my first time in Seoul at that time, I spent a lot of time watching street performers/buskers.

On my last day, I spent the whole afternoon watching this group perform.

On my second trip to Seoul, I stayed for a few days in Myeongdong. I missed the vibe in Hongdae, and knew that I had to go back the moment I stepped out of my room.

Don't get me wrong, Myeongdong is my second favorite place in Seoul, but Hongdae just has a special place in my heart.

At that time, I was supposed to stay a few days in Busan, but some unexpected things happened so I ended up transferring from Myeongdong to Hongdae.

As usual, I went back to the familiar streets of Hongdae to watch young people performing for the crowds.

My time in Hongdae was shorter than during my first trip, so I didn't really get to watch performances that much.

It was Autumn the third time I was in Seoul, and because it was a bit cold, I didn't spend too much time on the streets. I still went back to Hongdae to watch performances, but I didn't spend as much time as I used to.

This year, I was in Seoul during one of the hottest period of summer, and I took advantage of the heat by watching as many performances as I can.

I intentionally avoided the weekend crowds in Hongdae because for me, crowds + hot weather don't mix well. I also spent some time with friends during my only weekend in Seoul so it was only during the weekdays (when there were fewer people and performers) that I got to spend some alone time in Hongdae.

My decision, however, proved to be an advantage as I got to watch some of the popular groups in Hongdae.

One of the groups I watched is known as Kingdoms, and each member has a fairly big following on social media.

Here they are dancing to Momoland's "Bboom Bboom" at twice the speed.

They also performed BTS' "Fake Love", which the audience loved.

Before this group appeared, I also got the chance to watch Leo, who (I only discovered it later on) is also a member of Kingdoms but often performs with other people.

Their performance of EXO's "The Eve" was welcomed by shrieks from fans (Leo is really popular.).

They also performed Winner's "Really Really."

I think I took more videos than normal during my last trip in Seoul.

These performers and their dedication to their craft, combined with the hip, youthful vibe in the area are just some of the reasons why Hongdae will always have my heart.
